Marriage Solemnization in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland

In England, Wales, or Northern Ireland you can be married at places of worship of other denominations of the Christian faith or of other faiths, according to the particular rites of that faith. Your first step should be to contact the minister or person in charge of marriages at that building. Not all buildings are licensed for the solemnization of marriages and if that is the case you may have to attend a civil ceremony first.

The place of worship must be in one of the districts where you or your partner is resident or you must be able to show that it is your regular place of worship. Where there is not a place of worship of your faith in your district, then you should be married at one in the nearest district or the place where you worship regularly. If there is no appropriate person who is licensed to marry you at your place of worship, you will have to arrange for a registrar to be present.

The Laws of England are somewhat different than other parts of the UK in that it is the building first that must qualify instead of the minister. This means of course that to provide more than religious services after a civil service that a chapel or church building will have to be established, and a congregation formed to receive approval.

Once your building is approved, your new church or ministry may apply for registrar authority.

When a registrar performs a civil ceremony there may not be any religious content included during the ceremony. Once the civil ceremony is completed you may provide these services after the fact. Becoming approved to perform marriages is more involved than in the USA, but for those serious enough to seek the authority the task is not insurmountable.

THIS IS ONLY ADVISE BASED ON PERSONAL OPINION AND SHOULD BE VERIFIED BEFORE PERFORMING A MARRIGAE SERVICE.
